Am I ready for an RYA Day Skipper Course?
B

efore they allow you to charter a yacht with them, most reputable charter companies require you to present certified proof that you can handle yourself on the water. In most cases, the proof required takes the form of an official Day Skipper Qualification from the Royal Yachting Association (RYA): a globally recognised certification of your ability to charter a boat.

The Day Skipper Qualification also allows you to apply an International Certificate of Competence, (ICC), something certain charter companies require on top of the Day Skipper qualification. This means that the RYA Day Skipper course is a necessary step on your journey to chartering your own yacht.

The RYA Day Skipper Course, as taught by the Mallorca Sailing Academy, is a fully practical 5-day experience, during which you will have full responsibility for the boat, the crew and navigation. A qualified, friendly instructor with a successful teaching track record will oversee your progress, providing guidance and ensuring your safety.

Requirements

There are, however, some basic requirements you will have to meet before you can apply for the RYA Day Skipper course. Firstly, you must have completed the RYA Day Skipper Theory course, to prove your knowledge before you put it to practical use.

You must also have accumulated a minimum of 100 sea miles, and have spent at least 5 days aboard ship, including 4 nights, as some basic knowledge of navigation and helmsmanship will be assumed. It is also assumed you will be in good physical shape.

The best way to qualify for the Day Skipper course is to first complete the RYA Competent Crew course. This will give you a solid foundation of knowledge about life as a crew member on a yacht, and build your confidence by giving you invaluable experience on the water.
