Competent Crew
I

f you have ever dreamed of boarding a sailing boat as a valued member of the crew rather than a passenger, working as a team to help the skipper traverse the waves, then Mallorca Sailing Academy’s 5-day Competent Crew course will help you realise your ambitions.

Spend an unforgettable week bonding with your fellow crew members and gaining practical hands-on experience in steering, on board safety, mooring, man overboard drills, dropping anchor, handling ropes and sails, and much more. It’s a fun, educational adventure, sailing through some of the world’s most beautiful waters surrounding the stunning Balearic Islands.

As well as gaining the skills and knowledge of a valued crew member, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy your surroundings during your week on the water. Spend your free moments relaxing in the Mediterranean sunshine, absorb the stunning scenery, make new friends, and enjoy Mallorca’s nightlife after docking for the evening.

Competent Crew is an entry-level course of the Royal Yachting Association for those who wish to be active crew members of a sailing yacht, meaning no prior sailing experience is required. However, some general sailing experience, whether on a yacht or any other type of sailboat, will certainly be useful. It is an exciting, hands-on course which will teach you a range of practical sailing skills, so ideally you should be in relatively good physical shape, able to move about with ease. The Competent Crew course will provide you with a solid foundational knowledge which will enable you to advance onto further sailing courses, should you wish.

Pre-course requirements

All that is required of you before embarking on this course is an interest in sailing, and a positive attitude. Any previous sailing experience is a bonus. A useful course to consider if you want to gain some basic knowledge before taking part in the Competent Crew course, is the RYA Start Yachting course, a relaxing 2 day sail with an experienced crew, offered by the Mallorca Sailing Academy.

All courses are taught in English, so if you are not at least conversational in English, please get in touch beforehand.

What to bring with you

Mallorca is known for its gorgeous climate, but even in this part of the world, the weather and temperature can change abruptly, especially on the ocean. Please make sure you bring a variety of clothing options – particularly waterproof clothing – and plenty of sun protection.

Also be sure to bring deck shoes, a hat, sunglasses, shorts and lightweight trousers, a quick-drying towel, swimwear, at least 2 litres of bottled water, and a soft bag which is easy to store. If you suffer from seasickness, please bring seasickness tablets, as well as any prescription medication you require.
