The VHF Short Range Certificate is a requirement for many of the Royal Yacht Association’s Yachtmaster certificates, and for this reason, this online course is a very good choice! You can learn all there is to know about handling a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio, understanding how this vital piece of safety equipment works. You will need to learn all of the correct procedures of use as this certificate is the minimum qualification you are required to have by law to control VHF and VHF DSC equipment on any vessel that is British flagged.
As an online course, you can complete it in your own time using the interactive website. You will also have the opportunity to reach out to an instructor for more information or if you get stuck. After you have completed the course, you will then be assessed by us using all of the latest marina radio sets, including ICOM and STANDARD HORIZON VHF/DSC. This is to make sure you are totally prepared for the exam, but of course, may not be necessary!
This course has no age restrictions and you do not need any experience before trying it out. So, if you want to advance your knowledge but don’t yet have much sea experience, this is a good option for you.
The course requires around 6–8 hours of self-study time, and then includes a practical classroom session for any additional training.
On the course, you will learn the basics of radio operation, how to use the correct frequencies, what to do in distress, emergencies and when you require medical assistance, how to make ship-to-shore calls, DSC simulation, Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons, and Search and Rescue.
After you have completed a written test and practical assessment, you will be awarded a VHF SRC Certificate.
