achting is all about leisure. Whether you dream of sailing through the crystalline waters of the Mediterranean, or taking part in a world famous race, yachts are to be enjoyed. Yachting traces its roots back to 17th century Holland, when the Dutch began racing sailing boats for recreation. The English word yacht comes from the Dutch ‘jacht’, meaning ‘hunt’, and whether you're hunting a secluded cove or the thrill of the race, Mallorca is the perfect place to achieve your sailing ambitions.
While there are many types of racing vessel, they can generally be separated into two broad groups: large yachts, which are designed for extended voyages, and smaller racing craft like dinghies and skiffs. All recreational boats can be referred to as yachts, regardless of size.
Yacht racing is a common participant sport across the world, especially in larger bodies of water with favourable weather conditions. Part of what makes Mallorca and the rest of the Balearic Islands perfect for competitive sailing is the pleasant weather, reliable winds, and warm Mediterranean waters. There is also enough sheltered bays and coves for racing smaller craft like dinghies.
The most prestigious yacht races take place across the open ocean, racing from point-to-point in a test of sailing know-how, equipment durability, willpower, and teamwork. Bad weather can make these races incredibly dangerous, and it has been known for some racers in more hazardous conditions to become lost at sea. Since the Balearic Islands rarely experiences extreme weather, especially in the summer season, it is a comparatively safe location in which to race, even for beginners.

There are several common commercial uses of watercraft which are not referred to as yachting. These include the likes of shipping, commercial fishing, operation of ferries, military applications for watercrafts and more. In these cases, the term yachting is not used. Instead, larger vessels are referred to as ships and smaller vessels are referred to as either ships or boats. However, it’s important to remember that boat is a generic term. As such, it can be applied to a recreational yacht or a commercial or military vessel that is of a smaller size.
