Yachtmaster Information

I

f you’ve ever dreamed of being master of your own boat – sailing through the crystal waters of the Mediterranean and commanding your own crew – then gaining a Yachtmaster qualification will likely be the final step in turning that dream into a reality.

Being master of your own boat is a big responsibility, requiring experience, a great deal of boating knowledge, and a cool head. A Yachtmaster qualification certifies your ability to handle yourself and your vessel on the water. The training course and certification is maintained by the Royal Yachting Association in the UK, but training is conducted in many countries, including Mallorca.

There are three different Yachtmaster titles: Yachtmaster Coastal (formerly called Coastal Skipper), Yachtmaster Offshore, and Yachtmaster Ocean. Each of these specify the level of competence required and the area of operation certified. There is also a minimum set of requirements every candidate must meet before they will be allowed to take the necessary examination. These are:

- You must be at least 17 years of age.

- You must hold a Radio Operator’s Qualification. A Restricted (VHF only) Radio Operator's Certificate or a GMDSS Short Range Certificate, or alternatively a higher grade of marine radio certificate.

- You must have achieved a minimum number of sea miles. Candidates must have logged at least 30 days at sea, including 2 days as skipper, 800 nautical miles and 12 nights. Half the qualifying sea time must be conducted in tidal waters.

The examinations for Yachtmaster Coastal and Yachtmaster Offshore are both practical, taking place on a boat between 7m and 24m in length over the course of at least 6 hours. During the exam you will be expected to prove your skills and knowledge of skippering, navigation, safety procedures, terminology, meteorology and more. The Yachtmaster Ocean examination consists of both a written and oral test, which again test your knowledge of sailing, boats, and on-board duties.

Getting in plenty of practice before these examinations is therefore essential. The Mallorca Sailing Academy offers a range of different sailing course, suited to both beginners and more seasoned sailors. Improve your knowledge, gain some experience, and build up your sea miles in the ideal sailing waters of the Balearic Islands.
