Yachtmaster Ocean Theory Course

he Yachtmaster Ocean Theory Course is an excellent way to bolster your training while also learning about and understanding the application of the sextant. It is a course in Astro navigation, worldwide meteorology, and passage planning that helps sailors advance their knowledge of the seas. An advanced course, this is the perfect option for those who already hold the Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence, especially if they’re about to embark on their first ocean passage.

Requirements for the Course

- You must be aged 18 years or over

- Have a DoT Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate issues before 1973, or an RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence

- Radio Operators Certificate

- First Aid Certificate

- Have undergone an ocean passage as a skipper or as the mate of watch

- You must have planned a passage and the yacht must have been at sea for 96 continuous hours while more than 50 miles from land, and sailed a combined distance of 200 miles or more

- All sea time must have been within the last 10 years

What You Need on the Day

You need to take a sextant, if you own one. You will also need pens and paper for note taking.

- Course runs for 5–7 days

- Course is classroom based with optional days at sea

- Use and care of the sextant

- The meridian altitudes

- The earth and celestial sphere

- The sun, the stars, and other sights

- Passage planning on the ocean

- The examination process

Once you have completed the examination successfully, you will be awarded the Yachtmaster Ocean Theory Certificate.

After the Course

After you have successfully completed this course and submitted all the corresponding documents, you will then be able to book an exam with an Ocean examiner and eventually become qualified to skipper a yacht.
